In September, 1914, the 1/8th Middlesex battalion went to Gibraltar, the first Territorial Army unit to go abroad. In February, 1915, they returned home and in March they went to France where they joined 85 Brigade of 28th Division. Their first experience of the trenches came at the end of March when they underwent trench warfare training with 7 Brigade of 3rd Division in the line to the south of Ypres in Belgium. Between 2nd and 4th April the battalion came together at Kruisstraat and rejoined 85 Brigade and it was here on 4th April that Arthur Brooks was killed but the battalion diary provides no further information concerning his death which was likely to have been the result of shell fire.
